La Alianza Hispana (The Hispanic Alliance), founded in 1970, is a community based, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Latino self-determination, advocating for equal access to basic services, and combating the effects of poverty, discrimination and the stress of migration.
La Alianza Hispana provides linguistically and cultural appropiate services primarily to the Latino community of greater Boston and also advocates for equal access to basic human services for all.
Ever since a handful of neighbors gathered in a Roxbury storefront in 1970 to form a self-help alliance for Latinos, La Alianza Hispana has been a central force in Boston's Latino community. For the 38% of the city's Latinos who live in the Roxbury/Dorchester area—newcomers and longtime residents alike—the agency is an anchor that provides a continuum of health, education, and social services to residents.
We are a far-reaching, multi-service agency that offers universal supports such as job training, health and wellness clinics, assistance to families at risk, teen pregnancy prevention, and street youth outreach.
La Alianza Hispana has been a key player in the collaboration and community organizing that have revitalized the Dudley/Blue Hill neighborhoods.
Our programs have focused on capacity-building and prevention; today, we continue to maintain the four-point vision of community self-reliance on which La Alianza was founded. This vision includes:
La Alianza Hispana has a long history of accomplishments. We founded the state's first Latino seniors' center, licensed mental health clinic, and adult day health program. We were principal organizers of Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation, Casa Esperanza (a rehabilitation center for substance abusers), and the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative. La Alianza also developed Massachusetts' first program to increase Latino adoption and foster care resources. Our computer training program consistently ranked in the top ten nationwide among IBM's job training centers. Today, La Alianza Hispana looks to the future with a clearer picture of our past. The agency belongs to its neighborhoods; as such, we seek to foster a renewed sense of ownership among community residents. Our vision for the future is one of excellence through collaboration. While maintaining our deep roots in the community, we look toward forging a new alliance that results in even greater responsiveness and accountability to Boston's Latino residents.
